Historical information:
Tu-142 (according to NATO codification: Bear-F) is a Soviet and Russian long-range anti-submarine aircraft developed in the 1960s to combat US nuclear missile submarines. Its design began in 1963 as a response to the emergence of American SSBNs capable of delivering nuclear strikes against the USSR. The Tu-142 became a deep modernization of the Tu-95RC aircraft, receiving a new wing, tail, integrated fuel tanks and modern anti-submarine equipment. The first flight took place in 1968, and the aircraft was accepted into service in 1972. In total, about 100 copies of various modifications were built.
During its service, the Tu-142 was used not only for search and destruction of submarines, but also for long-range ocean reconnaissance, electronic surveillance and search and rescue operations. Aircraft of this type were in service with the Northern and Pacific fleets of the USSR, and later - Russia. In the 1980s, several Tu-142s were delivered to India, where they operated until 2017. Currently, some of the aircraft are being modernized to the level of Tu-142MZM and Tu-142MRM, which allows them to remain in service and perform modern anti-submarine defense and reconnaissance missions.
