Developed by the design bureau named after. Yakovleva,Yak-40 became the world's first local jet aircraft. The Yak-40 also became the first aircraft produced in the USSR to receive an airworthiness certificate in Western European countries (Italy and Germany). Production of the Yak-40 lasted from 1967 to 1981, a total of 1011 aircraft were produced, of which 125 were exported to 18 countries. Today, Yak-40 aircraft continue to be operated on regular airlines, as well as as business aviation aircraft.
