Historical information:
BMP-2 - Soviet and Russian tracked infantry fighting vehicle, designed to transport personnel, increase their mobility, armament and security on the battlefield. Development of the BMP-2 began in the 1970s at Kurgan Machine-Building Plant like deep modernization BMP-1. The need for modernization was caused by combat experience, especially in Afghanistan, where shortcomings in the weapons and design of the first model were revealed. In particular, the 73-mm BMP-1 cannon turned out to be ineffective against lightly armored and airborne targets, as well as in mountainous terrain.
B 1980 year, the first prototype of the BMP-2 passed state tests, and in 1982 year, the vehicle was officially put into service. The key difference was the new 30 mm automatic cannon 2A42 with a high rate of fire and the ability to fire at air targets, as well as the installation of the Fagot or Konkurs ATGM to combat tanks. The turret became more spacious, ergonomics for the crew and paratroopers improved, and the elevation angle of the gun made it possible to effectively fire at elevated targets.
The BMP-2 was actively used in various armed conflicts: in Afghanistan, Chechnya, the Middle East, Syria and other regions. The vehicle was praised for its maneuverability, versatility and firepower, although insufficient armor protection was noted. Subsequently, the BMP-2 was repeatedly modernized, modifications with enhanced protection, new combat modules and modern fire control systems appeared.
