Historical information:
BTR-90 "Rostock" (GAZ-5923) is a Russian wheeled amphibious armored personnel carrier, developed in the early 1990s at the Gorky Automobile Plant OJSC. First introduced in 1994 year as the further development of the line of eight-wheeled armored personnel carriers (BTR-60, BTR-70, BTR-80). The vehicle is designed to transport motorized infantry, fire support and perform combat missions as part of the ground forces.
Main stages and features
- Testing and adoption: state tests completed in 2004 year, officially adopted in 2008 year. However, mass production was never launched - only a small pilot batch was produced. B 2011 year, the Russian Ministry of Defense refused further purchases, and in 2015 In 2009, the BTR-90 program was finally curtailed in favor of new platforms (Boomerang, Gilza).
- Construction and protection: The BTR-90 is distinguished by reinforced armor compared to the BTR-80, a V-shaped bottom for increased mine protection, independent suspension on all wheels, a hydromechanical reversible gearbox and the ability to turn on the spot (like tracked vehicles). The vehicle is capable of swimming and is equipped with a modern fire control system.
- Weapons: The basic combat module includes a 30-mm 2A42 automatic cannon, a 7.62-mm PKT machine gun, an AGS-17 automatic grenade launcher and a Konkurs-M ATGM. There are modifications with various combat modules, including Berezhok and Bakhcha-U.
