BRDM-2 was a floating wheeled two-axle vehicle, had a general layout with a front location of the control compartment and a stern location of the power plant, which made it possible to improve visibility of the area from the driver's workplace and increase the navigability of the vehicle, since installing the engine in the rear part of the hull provided a stable trim to the stern . To monitor the terrain, the commander's TPKU-2B periscopic device and four prism devices were used. When driving at night, the driver was equipped with a TVN-2B night vision device.
