In order to convert the GAZ-12 gas to the Su-12, the designers had to work thoroughly: they placed a cabinet with a gun, a shield, a platform, a towing device, a spare wheel, front flooring, a reflector with a damper, charging boxes, and a zip laying. The shield cover of the SU-12 was a box cooked from steel 4 mm thick. The front leaf had the main embrasure for passing the swinging part of the gun and two windows on its left side: the upper - under the reflector of the panorama, the lower - for the visitor tube. The windows were closed with limiters. With the help of squares and braces, the shield was attached to the rotating part of the cabinet. An additional shield of the same thickness as the main one was installed on the swinging part of the artillery system to cover the main embrasure. He did not limit the rollback of the guns and angles of vertical guidance. The slope of the shield to the axis of the barrel canal was 80 °, the lower part was bent forward by 10 °. The platform served as the foundation for the toleous installation, in addition, it hardened and lengthened the car frame. The back wall of the cab from the action of powder gas was protected by the reflector. It was a vertical wall of 2-mm steel sheet with a window in the middle. The latter was intended to communicate between the calculation of the gun and the driver of the car and was closed from the inside of the cabin with a steel barrier. Two chargers were attached to the reflector: the right (in the course of the car) accommodated 18 regular grenades, the left- 18 regular shrapnel. The Su-12 self-propelled installation was quite a mobile and effective means of fire support for mechanized units. At the same time, the exploitation of it in the troops showed that for this purpose, self -propelled artillery on the caterpillar chassis is needed.
