The first KV -1C tanks entered the troops during November - December 1942. These machines were equipped with separate guards tank regiments of breakthrough (numbering 21 KV-1C tanks). These regiments were given to strengthen in rifle and tank formations to solve various tasks to break through the enemy defense during the development of the offensive. For the first time, KV-1C tanks were used on the Don Front in December 1942 during the liquidation of the 6th Army of Paulus near Stalingrad. Several guards tank regiments of the breakthrough participated in the offensive on the Kursk arc in the summer of 1943. Most of the breakthrough regiments were dispersed along the entire long line of the Soviet-German front, where it took part in local operations.
