The first KV-1S tanks entered service with the troops during November - December 1942. These vehicles were used to equip separate Guards breakthrough tank regiments (consisting of 21 KV-1S tanks each). These regiments were assigned to strengthen rifle and tank formations to solve various tasks of breaking through enemy defenses during the development of an offensive. For the first time, KV-1S tanks were used on the Don Front in December 1942 during the liquidation of Paulus’s 6th Army near Stalingrad. Several Guards breakthrough tank regiments took part in the offensive on the Kursk Bulge in the summer of 1943. Most of the breakthrough regiments were dispersed along the entire long line of the Soviet-German front, where they took part in local operations.
