Tank T-34-76 - Soviet medium tank, which became the most popular and one of the most effective tanks of the Second World War. It was developed in 1939 at the design bureau of the Kharkov Locomotive Plant No. 183 under the leadership of M. I. Koshkin and A. A. Morozov, and mass production began in 1940.

Booking Hull forehead: 45 mm (tilt 60°), turret forehead: 45–52 mm, hull side: 40–45 mm

Design features:

  • Hull and turret: The armored hull had rational angles of inclination, which significantly increased protection from projectiles without increasing mass. The turret in the early series was a two-man turret; later (since 1943) more spacious three-man turrets with a commander's cupola appeared to improve visibility.
  • Chassis: Five double road wheels on board and wide tracks ensured high maneuverability. Suspension: independent, with coil springs.
  • Transmission: Initially a four-speed gearbox, later replaced with a more reliable five-speed.
  • Radio station: Early models were equipped with a 71-TK-3 radio station, later - with more advanced 9-R or 9-RM with a communication range of up to 25 km.

Historical significance and combat use: The T-34-76 combined three key qualities: high firepower (the 76-mm F-34 cannon penetrated the armor of most German tanks at a distance of up to 1000 m), anti-ballistic armor and excellent mobility. A simple and technologically advanced design made it possible to organize mass production at seven different factories, including enterprises evacuated to the rear.

At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, the T-34 was superior in basic characteristics to the German tanks PzKpfw III and PzKpfw IV. Its sloped armor was virtually invulnerable to standard Wehrmacht anti-tank weapons. By the middle of the war, with the advent of Tigers and Panthers, the effectiveness of the T-34 short-barreled gun decreased, which led to the creation of the T-34-85 modification. However, it was the T-34-76 that became a symbol of victory and set new standards for world tank building.
