Yak-9 is a Soviet single-engine fighter-bomber aircraft of the Great Patriotic War. The design bureau was developed under the direction of Alexander Sergeevich Yakovlev. It was the most popular Soviet fighter of the Great Patriotic War. Produced from October 1942 to December 1948. At the end of 1943, two fighters appeared, designated Yak-9U: one with the M-107A engine, the other with the M-105PF-2. In addition to installing a different type of motor, the design and aerodynamics of the base model were improved. The oil cooler was removed from under the hood and installed in the central part of the wing, the fabric covering of the rear fuselage was replaced with plywood, the sealing of the fuselage was improved and many other smaller but important improvements were made. New radiators began to be installed on the Yak-9U and cooling channels were improved, after which temperature conditions basically returned to normal. The Yak-9U turned out to be one of the most successful modifications of Soviet aircraft during the Second World War. Perhaps the only significant drawback of the Yak-9U was the short service life of the M-107A engine, which at the beginning was only 25 hours. Among fighter pilots, the Yak-9U aircraft received the nickname “killer” or “killer” for its outstanding qualities.
